THE GLORY OF JESUS ON THE CROSS
John 19:16-42 (Read 19:1-42)
Key Verse: 19:30
1. What was Pilate’s final decision, and what was the basis for his decision (1-16a)? Describe the crucifixion of Jesus (16b-18). What did the notice, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews,” written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek imply (19-22)?
2. How did John understand the soldiers’ actions (23-24; Ps 22:18)? What familiar faces did Jesus see near the cross, and how did he show compassion amidst his own suffering (25-27)? What do Jesus’ words “I am thirsty” reveal (28-29; Ps 69:21)?
3. What do Jesus’ last words reveal about the meaning of his death (30; Jn 1:29; 17:4-5)? What is the significance of Jesus giving up his spirit (Jn 10:17-18)? How does the cross reveal Jesus’ glory, and in what sense is it a victory (Heb 2:14-15)?
4. What conclusive evidence does John give for Jesus’ death (31-35)? What further Scriptures were fulfilled through this event (36-37)? What impact did Jesus’ death have on Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus (38-42)?
5. How can perceiving the glory of the cross strengthen us to overcome the darkness we face today?
