JESUS THE TRUE VINE

John 15:1-27

Key Verse: 15:5

1.   Who is the true vine?  Who is the gardener? (1)  What does this metaphor reveal about the relationship between God and Jesus? (cf.  Gen 2:8, Is 5:1-7, Mk 12:1-12) What does the gardener do and why? What does it mean to cut and prune?

 

2.   In what way had the disciples already become clean? (3, 13:10, 17:17) What is Jesus’ command and promise to the disciples who became clean? (4) What does it mean to remain?  

 

3.   Why should we remain in Jesus? (5,6) How can we remain in him? (7, 8:31, Col 2:6,7, 3:16) What happens when we remain in Jesus? (5b, 7b, 8, 16b)  Why is fruit-bearing so important in our lives? (8, 16, Gen 1:28, 31, Mt 7:16-20)

 

4.   How did Jesus show the Father’s love to us?  (9, 13) How can we remain in Jesus’ love? (9,10) What is Jesus’ example in love and obedience? (10b, 5:19, 30, 8:29, Heb 5:8,9)  Why does Jesus mention “joy” here? (11)  What does this show about the relationship between love, obedience, and joy?

 

5. What is Jesus’ repeated command? (12,17, 13:34,35)  How can we sinners be Jesus' friends? (13-14) What does it mean to be Jesus' friend? (15)

 

6. What does it mean that we did not choose him, but Jesus chose us? (16. Dt 7:7, 2 Sa 7:18,19, 1 Cor 1:26-29) What is his purpose of choosing us? (16b)

 

7.   Why does the world hate the disciples/us? (18-21) What must we do together with the Holy Spirit to the world, which hates us? (27)
